UpBeat is a hands-on course for teens 13-17 who are into music and want to learn how to play it, not just listen to it. You won't be watching from the sidelines. From day one you're on the decks, learning the technical side (beatmatching, mixing, reading a crowd) and building toward your own full set by Friday. Small groups mean real attention, not getting lost in a crowd. I've been DJing professionally for 17 years, across Australia and internationally, with Brisbane residencies at venues like Lina Rooftop, Hotel Terminus, Siroco, and Pawn and Co. I've been teaching for 5 years, and what I care about most is giving every student something real to walk away with: genuine skills, real confidence, and a creative outlet.

You'll learn to DJ the way it actually works in a club, not just how to press play on two tracks. Over four small-group sessions, we cover the gear, the theory, and the real skill of reading a mix, beatmatching, EQing, timing your transitions to the structure of the track, and building a set that actually flows. What's covered: Player and mixer fundamentals - navigation, cue points, tempo, EQ, and how a mixer's signal chain actually works Beatmatching and basic mixing, including headphone cueing and EQ transitions Music structure - how to time a transition instead of guessing Rekordbox from the ground up - building playlists, exporting to USB, prepping for a real gig A practical assessment where I give you direct feedback on your track selection, structure, and mixing Homework and a final recorded mix, plus a start on your press pack (bio, press shot, representative mix) A rundown on what to expect walking into your first real gig, client questions, gig checklists and playing to a brief You'll finish with a recorded mix in hand and a clear sense of what you can actually do, not just what you've been told about.
